Dreamer Memorial, Dunkard Fork and Crow Cemetery

About twenty feet out from the four corners of the Military Monument are these stones that commemorate those who served in different capacities in the wars this country has fought.

In what can only be quantified as an Adventure, today I went in search of the Dreamer Memorial Park (The Burial Place of I N Dreamer and his family which also contains a rather large monument dedicated to the Wars this country has fought, and the Soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Nurses of those wars. Also, on the way to finding the Crow Cemetery, drove through the Dunkand Fork Wildlife Management Area (In the WV Panhandle) and took some pics, it's quite a nice place really, a large damn and manmade lake. Then, after a lot of traveling, due to roads that my maps and GPS said were there, but were actually blocked off, found the Crow Cemetery, the Final Resting Place of the Crow Sisters, made infamous by the Crow Massacre, and their family.

There really are minimal differences between the X10 and its military counterpart apart from the obvious styling - the X10M sports an all black facial. The military version also features a red backlight and compass in degrees of mils units A lesser know difference is that the GPS funtion of the X10M can be set to use the MGRS system (Millitary Grid Reference System): The MGRS system was designed to simplify the specification of position and passing of coordinates for soldiers and marines. The MGRS system allows users to abbreviate the 13-digit UTM coordinate, making it easier to use. We have not found any immediate advantage here - unless of course you are calling the US army out to rescue you, they may find you a little faster! Lieutenant Mark Swinger taxies Blue Angel no. 3 down the runway at Huntsville International in preparation for a practice flight prior to a weekend air show.

Lt Swinger is from Warrenton, Virginia, He attended the University of Delaware, graduating in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Swinger then reported to Naval Air Station Pensacola for Officer Candidate School and was commissioned an Ensign in September 2000.

Lt. Swinger completed primary flight training at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas and completed advanced jet training in the T-45A Goshawk with Training Squadron 21 (VT-21) at NAS Kingsville, Texas. He received his wings of gold in July 2002.

In August 2002, Lt. Swinger reported to Fighter Squadron 101 (VF-101) at NAS Oceana, Virginia for training in the F-14D Super Tomcat. While a student with the “Grim Reapers,” Lt. Swinger was awarded the Top Stick and Top Hook awards for overall performance and carrier landing grades.

At the completion of initial training in the F-14D, he remained at NAS Oceana and reported to Fighter Squadron 31 (VF-31) in July of 2003. While assigned to the “Tomcatters,” Mark completed a Western Pacific tour aboard the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) and a deployment aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) in support of coalition ground forces participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom. During his tour, Lt. Swinger served as Power Plants Branch Officer, Legal Officer, Pilot Training Officer, Avionics and Armament Division Officer, and Landing Signals Officer (LSO). He received the Tomcatter Trophy Leadership Award and the Association of Naval Aviation George H. W. Bush Pilot of the Year award for 2006.

In April 2006, Lt. Swinger reported to Strike Fighter Squadron 106 (VFA-106) for transition to the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet. While serving as an Instructor Pilot with the “Gladiators,” he was the Assistant Program Development Officer, Senior Officer Syllabus Coordinator and Landing Signals Officer (LSO).

Lt. Swinger joined the Blue Angels in September 2007. He has accumulated more than 1,300 flight hours and 260 carrier arrested landings. His decorations include two Strike/Flight Air Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and various personal and unit awards.

Illegal, Dangerous, Plentiful, and Cheap - GPS Jammers

We all thoroughly enjoy using our various GPS devices to the extent that they have become indispensible in our daily lives.  We depend on them to keep us from getting lost, to keep track of our children and pets, to find specific types of business - restaurants, stores, gas stations, etc.  Our GPS devices and Smartphone apps help us to maximize the enjoyment of our vacations even protect us from harm by letting the proper authorities know our whereabouts if/when we find ourselves in perilous situations.

Sad to say that our honeymoon with our GPS is being threatened by unscrupulous, terroristic tactics carried out by uncaring and selfish individuals.  The tool being used to create such dangerous and potentially life threatening circumstances is the GPS jammer.  Regardless of the fact that these devices are  illegal in the United States and most of Europe, the gps jammers can be bought online directly from factories in China for to USD. Since the websites advertise the jammers as privacy protectors and tracking blockers, the average consumer is unaware of the jammers' capabilities to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting public.  Consider this incident reported in a recent article published in The Economist;  "in late 2009 engineers noticed that satellite-positioning receivers for a new navigation aid at Newark airport in New Jersey were suffering brief daily breaks in reception. Something was interfering with the signals from orbiting global positioning system (GPS) satellites. It took two months for investigators from the Federal Aviation Authority to track down the problem: a driver who passed by on the nearby New Jersey Turnpike each day had a cheap GPS jammer in his truck."

Now consider the fact that even though most people know that satellite signals are used by automotive satellite navigational devices, very few realize how many other industries rely on clear, uninterrupted GPS signals;  just to name a few, we have aviation, financial-securities clearing houses, mining and electricity distribution, mobile telecommunications, toll roads, weather forecasting and most importantly, the US military all rely on GPS. But wait, there's more because these signals are also used to synchronize the clocks in mobile-phone base stations, steer combine harvesters and keep oil platforms in position.  Since the satellites were first put in place for use by the US military over 20 years ago, its applications are far reaching and well beyond what any of us truly understand. 

This is nothing to play around with or take lightly.  Be warned!  It's time for all of us to grow up and start acting responsibly.  These gps jammers are ILLEGAL! If you don't want your boss, wife or husband to know where you're going - don't go, or consider leaving your GPS at home.  Whichever you choose, don't jeopardize the public safety and wellbeing to appease your own self interests.  Thank you.

Why doesn't the US Military have and issue personal GPS Locators for our troops. Why are we still missing our troops when there are many different "child locators" on the Market

they are working on such a system, but im not sure that it would actually be as effective as you may think.

being in the military myself, commanders know where their troops are, this is something learned within about 5 minutes of entering basic training. i imagine it would help them on the battlefield to an extent, but there is something a little unnerving about relying on technology for something as important as knowing where your troops are. a power outage or transmission failure would leave people wondering where their own ass is.

and in the case of troops lost on the battlefield, it would help in finding them, but not in the case of being captured, and it could even be used against the troops if the enemy was clever about it.

i personally dont think the inconvenience of having to change the battery constantly on a gps unit and the reliance people would have on it would outweigh the slight benefit
